Core Compost – STA Certified, All-Purpose

Our lovingly crafted STA Certified Compost is at the heart of Spurt’s philosophy and business, it’s who we are at our core.

Overview

Our lovingly crafted STA Certified Compost is at the heart of Spurt’s philosophy and business, it’s who we are at our core. This high-quality all-purpose compost is great for landscapes, gardens, farming, reclamation, commercial and MDOT Projects, and custom soil blending. This high-end soil amendment is a jack-of-all-trades, thanks to its high organic matter content, water-holding capacity, and beneficial microorganisms.

Core Compost is the foundation of all of our soil blends, and it shines on its own as a topdressing and in situ soil amendment. Core Compost is made from a blend of high-grade food and yard feedstocks, composted at our Wixom facility and tested regularly through the US Composting Council's Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) Program to verify and ensure quality and consistency. Applying compost is the best way to build resilient, productive, and healthy soil.

*Made from yard waste, food waste, animal products, and BPI products.

Ingredients

Made with local food scraps, yard waste, agricultural feedstocks, and BPI Certified products; and turned into the black gold that fuels gardens, landscapes, and healthy soils all over Southeast Michigan.

We craft a specific carbon to nitrogen ratio when mixing our recipe to meet the demand of the changing seasons, adding a natural bulking agent that increases the oxygen content and stabilizes temperatures in the windrows. After nine to twelve months of composting, the product is left to cure, further stabilizing and self-inoculating with beneficial microbes. The end result is a fine, yet slightly granular texture that is pleasant to work with and provides a balance of structure and biology.

Analytical

Our Core Compost has a rich chocolaty color, a fine particle size, and a nice granular texture. With a high organic matter content, it promotes healthy growth through enhanced soil structure, beneficial soil biology and a slightly alkaline pH. This light and spongy compost is screened to 3/8″, and weighs on average 1000 to 1400 lbs/cubic yard. Benefits

Applying compost is the best way to build productive and healthy soil. The organic matter supplied by compost transforms into stable humus over time that supports biodiversity and nutrient retention in the soil.

The abundant microorganisms in compost act to enhance the soil’s immune system, helping to fight off and has the potential to prevent certain soil diseases. The physical characteristics of the organic matter help build strong soil structure, creating well aggregated and porous, yet sponge-like soil matrix that is more resistant to compaction.

This matrix provides for the right balance of moisture and oxygen in the root zone, which promotes healthy root proliferation. It also improves the moisture holding capacity of light sandy soils, while improving infiltration and permeability in heavier clay based soils. Compost also improves the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and can help adjust soil pH.

Applications

Spurt STA Certified Core Compost is a great choice for landscape, trees, shrubs, turf, gardens, flowers, fruit, vegetables, farming, commercial construction, reclamation, MDOT work and soil blending. Core Compost is Spurt’s original high performance yet affordable all-purpose compost.

Topsoil Upgrade: The US Composting Council recommends “Strive for Five”, setting a target of 5% organic matter content by weight for soil. When amending depleted or shallow soils, first start with a soil test then depending on the results mix in several inches of compost, aiming for a blended end result of 5% organic matter content by weight.
